Anil Nedumangad

1972-2020

Anil Nedumangad was a popular Malayalam actor and theatre artist, known for his strong character roles in the Malayalam film industry in the recent years. He was one of the pioneers of satirical programmes in Malayalam Television. After a long stint in theatre, he made his debut in Thaskaraveeran with an uncredited appearance. His breakthrough was in the 2014 film Njan Steve Lopez, directed by Rajeev Ravi. Two years later, in Rajeev Ravi's Kammatipadam, he played the role of the main antagonist which gathered wide critical acclaim and popularity. His most appreciated role is in Sachy's Ayyappanum Koshiyum, in which he played the role of a Circle Inspector. Other notable movies in which he acted are Paapam Cheyyathavar Kalleriyatte, Queen of Neermathalam Pootha Kalam, Porinju Mariam Jose, Kismath, Paavada, Janaadhipan, Mandrothuruth and Ilayaraja

Bhanu Athaiya

1929-2020

Bhanu Athaiya aka Annasaheb Rajopadhye was an Indian costume designer. Her career spanned nearly over five-decade. Athaiya started her career as a freelance fashion illustrator for various women's magazines in Bombay, including the 'Eve's Weekly'. She worked in over 100 films, with Indian filmmakers such as Guru Dutt, Yash Chopra, B.R. Chopra, Raj Kapoor, Vijay Anand, Raj Khosla, and Ashutosh Gowariker and international directors such as Conrad Rooks and Richard Attenborough. She was the first Indian to win an Academy Award, winning one for costume design. She shared an Oscar for her work on the biopic about Mahatma Gandhi in 1983 directed by the British filmmaker Richard Attenborough. She shared the award for the Best Costume Design with acclaimed British designer John Mollo.

Fernando Solanas

1936-2020

Fernando Ezequiel ``Pino`` Solanas was an Argentine film director, screenwriter, and politician. In 1962, he directed his first short feature Seguir Andando and in 1968 he covertly produced and directed his first long feature film La Hora de Los Hornos, a documentary on neo-colonialism and violence in Latin America. Together with Octavio Getino, Solanas wrote the manifesto ``Toward a Third Cinema``. The idea of a political Third Cinema opposed to Hollywood cinema and European auteur cinema, inspired filmmakers in many so-called developing countries. His films include Tangos: el exilio de Gardel (1985), Sur (1988), El viaje (1992), La nube (1998), and Memoria del saqueo (2004), among many others. He was the National Senator representing the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires for six years, from 2013 to 2019. Solanas won the Grand Jury Prize and the Critics Award at the Venice Film Festival and the Prix de la mise en scène at the Cannes Film Festival. He was awarded a special Honorary Golden Bear at the 2004 Berlin Film Festival. He collaborated with the tango composer and musician Ástor Piazzolla on the soundtracks for various movies. Solanas was awarded The Lifetime Achievement Award of 24th IFFK 2020.

Irrfan

1967-2020

Sahabzade Irfan Ali Khan, known professionally as Irrfan Khan or simply Irrfan, was an Indian actor who worked in the Hindi cinema as well as British and American films. He made his screen debut with the Academy Award-nominated film Salaam Bombay! (1988). He received critical acclaim for playing negative roles in the drama films Haasil (2003) and Maqbool (2004), for which he won the Filmfare Award for Best Villain. He rose to prominence with his portrayal of Paan Singh Tomar in Paan Singh Tomar (2012), garnered him the National Film Award for Best Actor and a Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor. His performance in the BAFTA Award-nominated romance The Lunchbox (2013) earned him universal acclaim by critics and audiences. Khan went on to feature in the commercially and critically successful films Haider (2014), Gunday (2014), Piku (2015), and Talvar (2015). Globally, Khan had worked in numerous international projects, such as The Warrior (2001), The Namesake (2006), The Darjeeling Limited (2007), the Academy Award-winning film Slumdog Millionaire (2008), New York, I Love You (2008), The Amazing Spider- Man (2012), Life of Pi (2012), Jurassic World (2015) and Inferno (2016).

Kim Ki-Duk

1960-2020

Kim Ki-Duk was a South Korean film director, noted for his idiosyncratic arthouse cinematic works. His films have received many distinctions in the festival circuit, rendering him one of the most important contemporary Asian film directors. Kim began his career as a screenwriter. In the following year, Kim made his debut as a director with a low budget movie titled Crocodile (1996). His major festival awards include the Golden Lion at 69th Venice International Film Festival for Pietà, a Silver Lion for Best Director at 61st Venice International Film Festival for 3-Iron, a Silver Bear for Best Director at 54th Berlin International Film Festival for Samaritan Girl, and the Un Certain Regard prize at 2011 Cannes Film Festival for Arirang. His most widely known feature is Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring (2003), included in film critic Roger Ebert's Great Movies. Two of his films served as official submissions for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film as South Korean entries. He gave scripts to several of his former assistant directors including Juhn Jai-hong (Beautiful and Poongsan) and Jang Hoon (Rough Cut).

Ramachandra Babu

1947-2019

K. Ramachandra Babu was an Indian cinematographer who worked mostly in Malayalam Cinema. He was one of the founders of the Indian Society of Cinematographers (ISC). He made his feature film debut in 1971 as a cinematographer for Vidyarthikale Ithile Ithile, which was also the director John Abraham and writer Azad's debut. He was also the cinematographer of the debut films of M.T. Vasudevan Nair and K.G. George; Nirmalyam (1973) and Swapnadanam (1976) respectively. His first colour film Dweepu (1977), directed by Ramu Kariat, won him his first Kerala State Film Award for Best Cinematography. He also won State Awards for Rathinirvedam (1978) and Chamaram (1980) directed by Bharathan and Oru Vadakkan Veeragadha (1989) directed by Hariharan. He was the cinematographer for the first Cinemascope film in South India, Alavuddinum Athbutha Vilakkum (1979) directed by I.V.Sasi. He worked for over 125 films in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Arabic, and English languages, and his other noted films are Bandhanam (1978), Agraharathil Kazhuthai (1978), Itha Ivde Vare (1977), Yavanika (1982), Padayottam (1982), Kanmadam (1998) and Sallapam (1996). went on to feature in the commercially and critically successful films Haider (2014), Gunday (2014), Piku (2015), and Talvar (2015). Rishi Kapoor

1952-2020

Rishi Raj Kapoor, widely regarded as one of the most successful actors in Indian cinema. Born into the Kapoor family, he made his debut, as an adolescent, in his father Raj Kapoor's film Mera Naam Joker (1970), for which he won the National Film Award for Best Child Artist. As an adult, his first lead role was opposite Dimple Kapadia in the teen romance Bobby (1973), which won him the Filmfare Award for Best Actor. Between 1973 and 2000, Kapoor starred as the romantic lead in 92 films. Some of his notable films during this period include Khel Khel Mein (1975), Kabhi Kabhie (1976), Sargam (1979), Karz (1980), and Chandni (1989). Since the 2000s, he played character roles to critical acclaim in such films as Do Dooni Chaar (2010), Aurangzeb (2013), and Mulk (2018). For his performance in Do Dooni Chaar (2010), he won the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor, and for his role in Kapoor & Sons (2016), he won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor. He was honoured with the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008. His final film appearance was in the movie The Body (2019).

Sachy

1972-2020

K. R. Sachidanandan, professionally credited as Sachy, was an Indian screenwriter, director, and film producer who worked in the Malayalam film industry. Sachy, was active in theatre right from his college days. His directorial debut was Anarkali in 2015. He had co-scripted many films with Sethu and later started writing solo scripts. Sachy was a practising lawyer at the Kerala High Court. He scripted many hit films including Driving Licence, Ramaleela, Seniors, and Run Baby Run. His last film was Ayyappanum Koshiyum (2020) which he also directed.

Shanavas Naranippuzha

1983-2020

Naranipuzha Shanavas is a Malayalam director, known for his movie Sufiyum Sujathayum, which is the first Malayalam film to be released directly on an OTT platform. Notably, Shanavas had made his directorial debut with the 2015 film Karie, which was a darkly humorous take on caste oppression. He has directed hundreds of ad films, 5 short films, and 3 documentaries. He has received the state film award for his short film Egg & Abby. Shanavas' film Nine Centimeters represented India at the 2009 International Short Film Festival in Jordan and won the international award. In 2013, he directed the Malayalam film Avicharitha but the film was not released. In 2015, Shanavas' Karie was shortlisted for the National Film Awards.

Soumitra Chatterjee

(1935-2020)

Soumitra Chatterjee was an Indian film actor, director, writer and poet. He started his acting career with Satyajit Ray's Apur Sansar (1959), the third part of The Appu Trilogy. He is best known for his works with director Satyajit Ray, with whom he did fourteen films. He also worked other famous directors of Bengali Cinema, such as Mrinal Sen, Tapan Sinha, Asit Sen, Ajoy Kar and Tarun Mazumdar. He acted more than 200 films in his career. His directorial debut Stree Ki Patra (1986) was based on the Bengali short story by Stree Patra by Rabindranath Tagore and also received critical acclaim. He is the recipient of France's highest award for artists, Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (1999) and also France's highest civilian award Chevalier de la Legion d'honneur (2017). He was awarded the Padma Bhushan (2004) and also received two National Film Awards as an actor and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his work in theatre. In 2012, he was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for lifetime achievement in Indian cinema. His other notable works as an actor are Charulata (1964), Abhijan (1962), Sonar Kella (1974), Parineeta (1969).
