The Wind will Carry Us / Bad ma ra khahad bord ( Abbas Kiarostami )
Director : Abbas Kiarostami / France, Iran / 1999 / 118 mins / Farsi
Synopsis : A camera crew arrives in a remote region of Iranian Kurdistan because they’ve learned that an extremely old woman is about to die, and they want to record the folk ritual that will follow her passing. Their disorientation, apparent from the opening moments of the film, gradually spreads to the spectators, and the film assumes many guises: a satirical portrait (or self-portrait) of a self-involved filmmaker, an ethnographic or documentary examination of an exotic culture, and an often comic illustration of “the vanity of human wishes.” For its director it also marks a new exploration of the importance of sound in film, since many of the film’s characters are heard off-camera but never seen.
