Fever… / Pani…
Dir: Santhosh Mandoor / India / 103 minutes / Malayalam / 2018
There is an age old custom called ‘Thalaikoothal’ (involuntary euthanasia), a ghastly form of senicide being practiced secretly in some villages of Madurai and other rural parts of Tamil Nadu even to this day. Traditionally it is performed on the old bed-ridden and distressed people with their consent who find living more painful. However, lately this custom has been misused by some. Children forcefully get rid of their healthy parents for acquiring their property, a government job or simply because they no longer want them to be a part of their lives, hence getting away with murder.
The story follows the journey of Raghavan, a septuagenarian who at an early age after marriage relocated from Palakkad, a district in Kerala with his wife Janaki to a lesser known barren hillside village on the outskirts of Madurai in Tamil Nadu.
