Open Forum- Day 5
The fourth session of Open Forum at 22nd IFFK became a confluence of thoughts of prominent directors while conducting a talk on ‘New Cinema- Yesterday and Today’. The panel was flawless with veteran directors including K P Kumaran , P T Kunju Muhammed, Semih Kaplanoglu and Sanju Surendran. The well-known critic Amrit Ganger was the moderator. He started the discussion by asking the panellists about how their works were different from the main stream. He started with the director of Aedan: Garden of desire, Sanju Surendran, and asked how he felt his film was a new film or an experience. Sanju shared that he stopped watching films so that he could create a new language and form in his cinema.
PT Kunju Muhammed opined that there was no yesterday or today , but everything was continuous. The form was a result or a by product of a culture, experiences, and the surroundings of our life, he added.
Semih Kaplanoglu indicated that the flow should be from the ground to the sky. He observed the current scenario had many options and more communication, but still there was struggle to accomplish. So, we should start from few and grow with more, he added.
K P Kumaran shared his insights by pointing out the advantages of current cinema including technology and globalization. The accessibility of the raw materials / films made every artist conscious of humanity and this was missing in my time, he said.
