Funding and Studio Interference- Young filmmakers’ concerns

poster

The 'Meet the Directors' session, the third in a series held at Tagore Theatre on December 12th, provided young directors with an opportunity to discuss the learning process and funding behind each production. While addressing the mistakes encountered and the subsequent corrections, the panel unanimously agreed that each production served as a learning experience, emphasizing that the goal is not to aim for perfection.

"Tiny budgets can impart big lessons in the production process," mentioned Vignesh P Sasidharan, director of 'Scheherazade.' According to Shruti Saranyam, director of 'B32 Muthal 44 Vare,' the so-called imperfections are an aftereffect of the lack of funds that new filmmakers receive, and they shouldn't take them as the norm. For Jayant Digambar Somalkar, director of 'Sthal,' everyone is his target audience. He added, "I see my film as a human drama, and if it has touched the hearts of the audience, I have made a good film."

In response to their opinions on how studio interference has affected them, Don Palathara, director of Family stated that he signs contracts for complete creative control. According to him, cinema is like a stream, and even if one attempts to control the flow through funding, it will still find a way. Sruti Saranyam expressed that more funding means more freedom. Jayant mentioned that as an independent producer, he and his team faced constraints, leading them to learn extensively to accomplish tasks efficiently and inexpensively.

This Meera Sahib-moderated session comprised a panel of directors, including Don Palathara, director of 'Family'; Shruti Saranyam, director of 'B32 Muthal 44 Vare'; Vignesh P Sasidharan, director of 'Scheherazade'; and Jayant Digambar Somalkar, director of 'Sthal.
