Born July 19, 1986 in Berlin, Aslı Özarslan studied from Theater and Media at the University of Bayreuth from 2007-2011 and philosophy and sociology at the Université Sorbonne IV in Paris. This was followed by editorial work for 3sat Kulturzeit, ZDF, ARD foreign studio in Warsaw. She attended film workshops in Israel and Turkey. From 2012-2017 she studied documentary film directing at Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg. In 2014 she received the Deutschlandstipendium, in 2015 the Akademie der Künste scholarship in the film and media art section and in 2017 the scholarship of the Tarabya Cultural Academy in Istanbul. In 2023 she was invited by NETFLIX for a talent workshop in Prague. INSEL 36 (2014) and her diploma film DIL LEYLA (2016) won international and national awards. Her current debut feature film project ELBOW (2024) has its world premiere at the 74th Berlinale in the Generation section.
Hazal's biggest dream: to be given a chance at a future outside of her parents' bakery. For her 18th birthday she wants to escape the everyday grind and party with her friends in Berlin. But a fatal incident changes everything, and Hazal is forced to flee to Turkey, a country unknown to her. There, she has to survive on her own, no matter what the cost.
