Maura Delpero

Maura Delpero, born on October 3, 1975, in Bolzano, Italy, is an acclaimed Italian filmmaker known for her work in both documentary and narrative cinema. Delpero's career began with documentary filmmaking. Her first two films, "Teachers" (2008) and "Nadia and Sveta" (2012), premiered at the Torino Film Festival. "Nadia and Sveta" earned her a nomination for Best Documentary Feature at the 58th David di Donatello awards. Her feature film debut, "Maternal" (2019), premiered at the 72nd Locarno Film Festival, where it received a special mention and the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury. The film was inspired by her experiences as a teacher in Argentine "hogars," homes for teenage mothers often administered by nuns. In 2020, Delpero was awarded the Women in Motion Young Talent Award by Kering and the Cannes Film Festival. In 2024, her film "Vermiglio" premiered at the 81st Venice International Film Festival, where it won the Grand Jury Prize. The film, originally titled "The Mountain Bride," is a World War II drama that showcases Delpero's storytelling prowess.

Synopsis

1944, Vermiglio, a remote mountain village. The arrival of Pietro, a deserter, into the family of the local teacher, and his love for the teacher’s eldest daughter, will change the course of everyone’s life.
