poster

Swapnaayanam, the signature film of the 29th International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK), is a poignant tribute to P K Rosy, the pioneering heroine of Malayalam cinema. Directed by K O Akhil, the film vividly captures Rosy's legacy, struggles, and indomitable spirit.

The film begins with the historic announcement of the release of Vigathakumaran, the first Malayalam feature film, at Capitol Theatre in Thiruvananthapuram. Through evocative visuals, it traces the city's transformation, showcasing the emergence of new theatres and the evolution of Malayalam cinema. The narrative culminates in a moving scene where P K Rosy, who was forced into exile after Vigathakumaran's release, is imagined seated confidently among the audience at the New Capitol Theatre, symbolizing the overdue recognition she deserves.

The film concludes with Rosy unveiling LankaLakshmi, the emblem of IFFK, representing unity, cultural diversity, and the transformative power of cinema. This symbolic act repositions Rosy as a cornerstone of Malayalam cinema's heritage.

Director K O Akhil weaves a compelling narrative using animation to depict Thiruvananthapuram's growth as the cradle of Malayalam cinema. Abhirami Bose's portrayal of P K Rosy adds depth and grace to the film. Swapnaayanam not only honors Rosy's legacy but also highlights the resilience and cultural richness of Malayalam cinema, making it a fitting signature for this year's IFFK.
