Deepa Mehta, born on September 15, 1950, in Amritsar, Punjab, India, is an acclaimed Indian-born Canadian film director and screenwriter. She is best known for her Elements Trilogy: "Fire" (1996), "Earth" (1998), and "Water" (2005). These films explore complex social issues and have garnered international recognition. Mehta has received numerous awards, including a Genie Award for the screenplay of "Bollywood/Hollywood" (2002) and the Governor General's Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement in 2012, Canada's highest honor in the performing arts.
