Director's bio

Jia Zhangke

Jia Zhangke, born on May 24, 1970, in Fenyang, Shanxi, China, is a renowned Chinese film director, screenwriter, producer, actor, and writer. Jia's early works, a loose trilogy based in his home province of Shanxi, were made outside of China's state-run film bureaucracy and are considered "underground" films. His status in China rose when he was allowed to direct his fourth feature film, "The World," with state approval in 2004. Jia's films have received critical acclaim and international recognition, including winning the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival for "Still Life" in 2006. Jia Zhangke's contributions to cinema have earned him numerous awards, including the Leopard of Honour at the Locarno Film Festival in 2010 and the Carrosse d'Or lifetime achievement award at the Cannes Film Festival in 2015.
