Marcelo Botta, born on May 2, 1984, in Brazil, is a Brazilian author and filmmaker. In 2024, his first feature film, "Betânia," was selected at the 74th Berlinale (Panorama) and Cinélatino Toulouse (Coup de Coeur). The feature participated in Ventana Sur 2022's First Cut session and won three post-production prizes. Prior to "Betânia," Botta created and directed many documentary and fiction series for Paramount+, MTV, and FOX, filming in over 20 countries. His series "Auto Posto" had two successful seasons on Comedy Central between 2020 and 2023.
After losing her husband, 65-year-old midwife Betânia is persuaded by her daughters to leave her remote village. She moves near the sand dunes of Lençóis Maranhenses in northern Brazil and ventures a new beginning.
