Director's bio

Mrinal Sen

Mrinal Sen (1923–2018) was a pioneering Indian filmmaker, celebrated as one of the foremost figures of parallel cinema in India. Born on May 14, 1923 in Faridpur (now in Bangladesh), Sen studied physics at the University of Calcutta before gravitating toward cinema through his involvement with the Indian People’s Theatre Association. His debut film Raat Bhore (1955) marked the beginning of a career that spanned nearly five decades, during which he directed over 25 films in Bengali, Hindi, and Telugu. Sen’s breakthrough came with Bhuvan Shome (1969), often credited with ushering in India’s New Wave cinema. His filmography includes acclaimed works such as Calcutta 71 (1972), Padatik (1973), Ek Din Pratidin (1979), Kharij (1982), Genesis (1986), and Antareen (1993). Known for his politically charged narratives, Sen explored themes of social inequality, urban unrest, and human resilience, often blending realism with experimental storytelling. His films won numerous international awards, including honors at Cannes, Berlin, and Moscow, while in India he received the Padma Bhushan (1983), the Dadasaheb Phalke Award (2003), and multiple National Film Awards.
