Ramu Kariat (1927–1979) was a pioneering Malayalam filmmaker whose works brought literary depth and social realism to Indian cinema. He began with Neelakkuyil (1954), co-directed with P. Bhaskaran, which is considered the first Malayalam film to embrace social realism. His filmography includes Minnaminungu (1957), Moodupadam (1963), Ezhu Rathrikal (1968), Agniputhri (1967), Nellu (1974), and Maanasakshi (1979), but his most celebrated work remains Chemmeen (1965), adapted from Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai’s novel. Chemmeen became a landmark in Indian cinema, winning the National Film Award for Best Feature Film, the first South Indian film to achieve this honor, and earning international recognition at film festivals.
