Kumar Shahani (1940-2024) was one of the pioneers of India’s arthouse cinema movement. He studied screenwriting and direction at the FTII, Pune where he met the two most profound influences in his life: iconoclastic filmmaker Ritwik Ghatak and the Marxist historian and polymath Damodar Dharmananda Kosambi. He won a French government scholarship for higher studies in France, where he studied at the Institut des Hautes Etudes Cinématographiques and assisted Robert Bresson on Une Femme Douce (1969). His epic oeuvre includes features Maya Darpan (1972), Tarang (1984), Khayal Gatha (1989), Kasba (1990) and Char Adhyay (1997). His major shorts and documentaries include The Glass Pane, Manmad Passenger, Fire in the Belly, Var Var Vari, Bhavantarana, Bamboo Flute and As the Crow Flies.
