Goutam Ghose, born on July 24, 1950, in Kolkata, India, is a renowned Indian film director, actor, music director, and cinematographer who primarily works in Bengali cinema. hose started his career in the early 1970s, making documentaries. His first documentary, "New Earth," was released in 1973, followed by "Hungry Autumn," which earned him international acclaim. Some of his notable films include "Maa Bhoomi" (1980), "Dakhal" (1981), "Paar" (1984), "Antarjali Jatra" (1987), "Padma Nadir Majhi" (1992), "Abar Aranye" (2003), "Moner Manush" (2010), and "Shankhachil" (2016). He is the only Indian to have received the Vittorio De Sica Award in Italy in 1997. In 2012, the Government of West Bengal honored him with the Banga Bibhushan for lifetime achievement. He was also awarded the Knighthood of the Star of the Italian Solidarity in 2006.
When a Dalit wins the elections for mayor in his small village in northeastern India, deadly rioting forces an impoverished couple to escape to Calcutta where they can hopefully find work. Instead, they end up sleeping on the streets until they have a chance at earning a little income – a man has asked them to take his herd of pigs across a fast-moving river. The current is dangerous, and worse, the wife is pregnant and this would not be an easy task even if she were not. Undaunted and desperate, the couple accept the job and enter the river to face their destiny.
