Jayaraj, born in Kerala in 1960, is a versatile Malayalam filmmaker whose oeuvre spans mainstream hits and acclaimed art films. His works often adapt literature and explore humanist themes. Notable films include Desadanam (1996), Kaliyattam (1997), Shantham (2000), Ottal (2015, Crystal Bear Berlin), and Bhayanakam (2018).
Synopsis
Adapted from Chekhov’s Vanka, the film follows orphaned Kuttappayi and his grandfather in Kerala’s waterways. Their tender bond is tested when poverty threatens to force the boy into labor, illuminating themes of compassion and injustice
