Hou Hsiao-hsien, born in 1947 in Guangdong and raised in Taiwan, is one of the most influential auteurs of world cinema. Renowned for his contemplative style marked by long takes and minimal camera movement, Hou’s films explore Taiwanese history, memory, and everyday life. His landmark works include A City of Sadness (1989, Golden Lion Venice), The Puppetmaster (1993), Good Men, Good Women (1995), Millennium Mambo (2001), and The Assassin (2015, Cannes Best Director).
Set in late-19th century Shanghai’s “flower houses,” the film portrays courtesans and their wealthy patrons navigating love, loyalty, and betrayal. Within candlelit rooms filled with opium smoke and ritualized banquets, shifting affections and rivalries expose the fragile balance of survival and desire
